Lake Forest is home to a wide mix of families, longtime residents in established neighborhoods, business owners, and younger families who've moved in more recently. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, the goal is the same: making sure your family is protected and your wishes are clear if something happens to you.
You've Been Meaning to Get This Done
If you're like most of our clients, you've thought about estate planning for years. Maybe a parent passed away without a plan, and you watched the family struggle through probate with all its delays, legal fees, stress. Maybe a friend or neighbor passed unexpectedly, and it reminded you that none of us know how much time we have. Or maybe you've simply reached the point where you're done putting it off.
Whatever brought you here, you're not alone. And you’re also not behind. You're exactly the kind of person we work with every day. Someone who wants to do this right, protect the people they love, and finally check it off the list for good. And guess what? You’ve already taken the first step, because you’re here!
What Happens Without the Right Plan
Here's what we see far too often: a family loses a loved one, and instead of grieving, they're thrown into probate, a court-supervised process that can take 12 to 24 months and consume 3% to 7% of the entire estate in fees and costs. Bank accounts get frozen. Real estate can't be sold or transferred. Decisions that should be simple require a judge's approval. And the surviving spouse, who is the person who should have the easiest possible path forward, is often left navigating all of it alone, at the worst possible time.
A properly funded, up-to-date revocable living trust avoids all of this. Assets pass directly to your spouse and children according to your wishes—privately, efficiently, and without court involvement.
"But, We Already Have a Trust..."
This is one of the most common things we hear and one of the riskiest assumptions a family can make.
If your trust was created more than 5-10 years ago, ask yourself:
- Does it reflect your current assets, including property you've bought or sold since then?
- Have your children grown up, married, had kids of their own, or gone through major life changes that should affect how and when they receive their inheritance?
- Does it account for a business you've started, grown, or sold?
- Does it still name the right people as trustees, guardians, and beneficiaries?
- If your spouse passed away tomorrow, could you access everything (bank accounts, property, the business) without a problem?
A trust that was "done" once but never reviewed can create a false sense of security. We regularly meet families who believed they were fully protected, only to discover their plan no longer matches their wishes, their assets, or their family structure. The good news: updating an outdated plan is far simpler than starting from scratch.
With Lake Forest's mix of single-family neighborhoods, business parks, and growing commercial areas, many of our clients here are business owners or real estate investors alongside their primary residence. If your estate includes a business interest, rental property, or anything beyond a single home, a generic or DIY trust often isn't enough to address it properly and that's exactly where an outdated or "one-size-fits-all" plan tends to fall short.

Protecting Your Spouse, Your Family, and Your Business
Whether you're married or single, have a blended family or a more traditional one, run a business or have built your wealth through real estate and investment, our approach starts with the same question: what do you want to happen, and for whom?
From there, we build a plan that addresses the things that matter most to our clients:
- Full, easy access for your surviving spouse: to bank accounts, real estate, and the business, without delay or court involvement
- A clear, conflict-free inheritance for your children: including special provisions for blended families, minor children, or beneficiaries who may need extra protection
- Tax-efficient strategies: to help protect what you've built from unnecessary erosion
- Business succession planning: so there's a clear answer to "what happens to the business if something happens to me?"
- Avoiding probate entirely:keeping your family out of the courts during an already difficult time
